Density: Explain density. Be able to use the density formula to solve for missing values.
The concept of density is explained to students through notes and a kinesthetic simulation, focusing on understanding density at the molecular level. They are taught the equation for density and work on practice problems solving for mass, volume, and density given information about the others.

Atomic Theory: Be able to name and give the charges and locations of the three major subatomic particles. Explain the nature of a chemical element.
Students are introduced to the history of atomic theory, and the three basic subatomic particles. By examining data on elements for trends, they discern that element is determined by protons, and the periodic table is also laid out by available electrons.

Compounds and Molecules: Distinguish between an atom, an element, a compound, and a molecule.
Finish periodic table activity. Notes on compound vs molecule, the nature of a bond, valence electrons and how to make Lewis dot diagrams. As an example of how subatomic particles determine properties and activity, students examine the case of carbon. Students examine ball-and-stick models of atoms and infer their valence electron structures from the number of bonds possible, making Lewis dot diagrams of them. Students are asked to determine how many different ways can Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen combine with the others available.
